World Stroke Day 2025 – Every Minute Matters to Save a Life

On the occasion of World Stroke Day, held on 29 October, the Ministry of Health and Social Security, in collaboration with Blëtz ASBL, wishes to remind the public of the importance of prevention and rapid action when facing this life-threatening emergency.

Every day, four people in Luxembourg experience a stroke – and it does not only affect older adults. These figures underline the need for ongoing vigilance and a better understanding of the warning signs.

Stroke – a medical emergency requiring immediate response

A stroke, also referred to as a cerebrovascular accident, occurs when a blood vessel in the brain becomes blocked by a clot or bursts, cutting off the blood supply to part of the brain. This interruption of oxygen quickly leads to brain damage. Symptoms appear suddenly and must be taken very seriously: confusion, difficulty speaking or understanding, dizziness, weakness or paralysis on one side of the body or in one limb.

If in doubt, call 112 immediately. Every minute matters — a prompt intervention can greatly reduce long-term complications and improve the chances of survival. To easily remember the key warning signs, think FAST:

  • F – Face: is the face drooping?
  • A – Arm: can the person raise both arms?
  • S – Speech: is speech slurred or strange?
  • T – Time: time is critical – call 112 right away.

Everyday prevention

Many strokes can be prevented through simple lifestyle choices: monitor blood pressure, check cholesterol levels regularly, stop smoking, eat a balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables, limit salt and alcohol intake, stay physically active, manage stress, and maintain good sleep quality.

Raising awareness through concrete action

Several awareness-raising activities are being organised by Blëtz ASBL, the association supporting stroke survivors in Luxembourg, with the support of the Ministry of Health and Social Security:

  • Conference “Migraine and Stroke”, on 19 October at 4 p.m. at Bettembourg Castle, with Dr Monique Reiff;
  • Free blood pressure tests will be available in various hospitals: on 28 October at the Centre Hospitalier du Nord, on 29 October at the Centre Hospitalier Emile Mayrisch, on 30 October at Hôpitaux Robert Schuman, on 31 October at Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg.
  • Information stand at the Rehazenter on 23 October;
  • Free blood pressure checks available in 92 pharmacies from 22 to 31 October;
  • Charity éclair sale in 90 bakeries from 22 to 30 October, with part of the proceeds donated to Blëtz ASBL. The list of participating bakeries and pharmacies is available at blëtz.lu.
